The 45th FIPP World Media Congress took place from 6-8 June 2023 in Cascais, Portugal. Congress 2023 brought together people from a cross-section of media and technology businesses.

With an investment from the Department of Canadian Heritage and Creative BC, the Canadian magazine industry associations (Magazines Canada, AQEM, the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association and the Magazine Association of BC) partnered to facilitate sending 12 Canadian magazine professionals to the Congress.

The delegation comprised of Travis Lunau, Blue Ant Media, Trudy Callaghan, EDify, Nina Wagner, Alive, Alina Cerminara, FOLKLIFE, Nicolas Langelier, Nouveau Project, Anicka Quin, Canada Wide Media, Suzanne Trudel, Alberta Magazine Publishers Association, Eithne McCredie, Literary Review of Canada, Serge Leclerc, Mishmash Média, Silvia Skene, Magazines BC, Evan Osenton, Alberta Views. Not pictured are Alberto Cortes, Here Magazine, Mathieu Lachapelle, Dînette Magazine and Catalina Morales Vélez, The Polyglot.

On June 6, the Canadian publishing delegates participated in a workshop presented by Daisy Donald, Principal, FT Strategies, (Financial Times). Delegates heard how the Financial Times future proofed its business by adapting to the changing needs of its customers, moved to a profitable digital-first business and transformed from ad-driven to reader-revenue – all while prioritizing the reader experience.

The FIPP Congress highlighted innovation and opportunities in the face of current sector disruption. Case studies, media stories and lessons from the world of media were shared about sustainability, EDI, and of course, generative AI and its challenges and opportunities. From podcasts to battling misinformation, delegates heard how publishers are adapting to change and finding success. A highlight was hearing from Burda Media publisher Adril Vdovychenko, whose team has demonstrated resilience and tenacity during the war in the Ukraine.

In addition to high-level programming, delegates connected with magazine makers from across the globe. Over 400 international media leaders attended the annual event, alongside 70 international speakers from media, technology and associated industries.

Thank you to FIPP and Di5rupt for designing an insightful program, and to the incredible speakers for sharing their time and expertise with us at World Congress 2023. We greatly appreciate the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage and Creative BC.
