About Us

The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA) sustains a healthy and thriving magazine industry by serving the people who publish, create, print and distribute a uniquely Albertan view of the world. We’re a classroom, a forum, a newsletter, an advocate and a united voice for magazine publishers in the province. Since 1995, we’ve supported magazines in Alberta and beyond through promotion, advancement, and practical programs that foster professional development and industry growth.

“It’s impossible to imagine operating as a literary magazine in Alberta without the support of AMPA – support that is always practical, forward-thinking, enthusiastic and plain old competent. AMPA makes our task seem not just doable but vital.”
Curtis Gillespie, writer, editor and publisher

Our Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion and Equity

AMPA stands with those calling for justice for communities affected by systemic racism, institutional bias and violence. We remain committed to promoting historically excluded groups and condemning racism, and are working to foster a magazine community based on the values of inclusivity, diversity, accountability and accessibility.

Steps we’re taking include:

  • We’re increasing diversity in our programming and among speakers at our events.
  • In 2020, we launched a survey with the Magazine Association of BC on representation of equity-seeking groups and diversity in magazine content. We’re now using the results to inform strategies and initiatives that contribute to a more diverse and inclusive magazine media industry.
  • We’ve launched an Indigenous Internship program to create opportunities for Indigenous peoples to pursue careers in magazine media.
  • We continue to offer diversity, inclusion and anti-racism training to industry members.
  • We promote and amplify historically excluded voices through a curated diversity and inclusion reading list from member magazines.
