Summarize the magazine’s achievements during the past year and how it has served the needs of its readers
Over the past year, The Polyglot has strengthened our role as a leading magazine for multilingual and intercultural literary voices in Alberta and beyond. Through our published magazine issues, chapbooks, events, workshops, residencies, and partnerships, we have not only supported writers and artists but have also fostered meaningful community connections in Canada and abroad.

In 2024, we published two groundbreaking issues: Manaig (Issue 13), edited by Mila Bongco-Philipzig in partnership with PHIDEAS (the Philippine Events and Arts Association in Edmonton) and funded by the City of Edmonton, which we launched at LitFest, and âniskôverberation (Issue 14), edited by Anna Marie Sewell and Lana Whiskeyjack in partnership with Supporting Indigenous Language Revitalization (SILR), which we launched at La Cité in Edmonton. We also expanded our literary offerings by launching Candice Joy Oliva’s chapbook, ISARO, at the Edmonton Urban Farm and publishing our first audiobook, featuring Luciana Erregue-Sacchi’s Of Mothers & Madonnas.

We deepened our commitment to Indigenous language revitalization through our partnership with SILR, facilitating summer workshops on art and poetry in Edmonton. These workshops created spaces for cultural expression and intergenerational learning, furthering our mission to support linguistic diversity. Our Love Empire event at the Art Gallery of Alberta was a major success, welcoming 188 attendees and celebrating multilingual artistic expression.

Our reach expanded internationally with our first month-long multilingual artist residency in Sicily, a partnership with OTIUM in Marsala, offering artists from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to create, collaborate, and connect across languages and disciplines. In Alberta, we strengthened our presence in the literary and arts communities by participating in the Art Gallery of Alberta’s Centennial Market and the Harvest Book Fair, ensuring greater visibility and engagement with readers and creators.

This year, The Polyglot and our contributors received significant recognition. Our poet Omar Ramadan won the Silver Award for Poetry from the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA), and our team member Catalina Morales Vélez was honoured as Volunteer of the Year by AMPA. We also launched Pensieri, our new blog dedicated to showcasing diverse perspectives, and introduced our new Member’s Hub online, fostering a stronger sense of community among our readership. Additionally, we welcomed incredible new team members who will help shape our future initiatives.

Through these achievements, we have continued to amplify diverse voices, foster artistic collaboration, and build a vibrant, multilingual literary community. Our work remains deeply rooted in inclusivity, innovation, and the celebration of language as a living, evolving force.
