Summarize the magazine’s achievements during the past year and how it has served the needs of its readers
We grew the number of paid subscribers to the magazine to 5,192. We increased our advertising revenue by 27%. We’ve added three lively new departments to meet the needs of readers who sometimes feel depressed by all the serious social, political and environmental concerns we raise. Members of the Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners visited our offices to share their perspectives as engaged readers of Alberta Views. Their feedback inspired these new initiatives:
Citizen Action: a response to the question “but what can we do?” about the problems we identify;
Alberta By Numbers: a collage of bite-sized, surprising information (ex: “$63 billion: record profits made by Canada’s oil and gas industry in 2022”);
Alberta Crossword: a crossword with an Alberta-focused theme that adds some fun to the magazine.

We continue to meet the needs of our readers by providing information of vital importance to all citizens through researched and fact-checked articles that compensate for a social media environment focused on instant news, custom-tailored bias-affirming content, disinformation and conspiracy theories. According to our Readers Survey, 89% of readers not only learn from the magazine, but actively discuss what they’ve read with others.
