Company: Central Edmonton News Society
Commitment: One-Year Contract, starting July 1, 2019
Central Edmonton News Society, publisher of the quarterly downtown magazine The Yards, seeks an editor for our award winning contract publication. Commencing July 1, 2019, the successful candidate would commit to a year long contract (four issues) with the possibility of extension.
The ideal editor is a great writer—concise, interesting and accurate—with a strong grasp of journalistic methods and standards and media law. As a strong researcher, proofreader and fact-checker, you are excited to join the team and work to raise our magazine’s profile. Good email etiquette and communication skills are a must, but, most of all, you are someone who’s well-organized, as The Yards staff works remotely, give or take a few board or coffeeshop meetings. Most duties will be editorial, but we could occasionally use your help with fun stuff like our quarterly launch parties, where you may have the opportunity to connect with your readers.
You will have a strong understanding of central Edmonton – including development issues, culture and lifestyle; community leagues and civic politics; experience following a newspaper or magazine issue from concept stage to publication; and the ability to project a professional image to our stakeholders and community. You will be able to generate story ideas yourself, and work with input from residents from the Oliver and Downtown communities and community leagues to help them craft their narratives.
You will be able to write news and feature articles for each quarterly issue, recruit freelance writers and edit their work, interview subjects across central Edmonton, prioritize and meet tight deadlines, and work well in a team environment. You’re a pro at InDesign and love magazines, reading and creating them, and are able to work with an art director on magazine layout and design.
In return? You get to be a part of an exciting team that is telling the story of life in Edmonton’s core neighbourhoods. Many of our writers have gone on to win accolades for their Yards stories, and our previous editors are nationally and internationally published.
