In the one-year lead up to the 2020 North American Indigenous Games taking place in Halifax, N.S., we wanted to explore the history of the games and some Indigenous athletes who have used sports as a way to connect with their cultures. Writer Nahnda Garlow, from an Onondaga Beaver Clan family, located three young athletes from across Canada who are using their love of basketball, lacrosse and archery to connect with their community, family and others. As Garlow also explains in this insightful feature, forming connections is at the heart of the games—and has a rich history in Indigenous culture.
