There is more to fish stocking than putting fish in a pond. This article describes the behind-the-scenes considerations that ACA biologists and collaborative partners scientifically analyze before stocking a waterbody. Not only is increasing recreational angling opportunities near urban centres and in waterbodies where angling opportunities would not otherwise exist an important aspect of conservation within Alberta, it is the primary goal of the project. To ensure that anglers are provided the opportunity to catch quality fish, biologists thoroughly explore waterbodies—including stormwater ponds—before introducing species. Not only do they analyze the water, surrounding wildlife, and habitat from the ground, they also study it from above using aerial photography. All the ingredients determine the success of a fishery, creating a balanced recipe.
