Romancing the Word

According to the Romance Writers of America, the “estimated annual total sales value of romance in 2013: $1.08 billion (source: BookStats).” This translates into a 34 per cent share of the American fiction market. Yet, for this billion-dollar industry, as Jennifer Snow writes in the April-June 2018 issue of WestWord, “Romance novels are criticized within the literary community, most often by people who have never read one.” In her article, “Romancing the Word,” Snow challenges our preconceptions about the Romance genre and offers insight into the sometimes surprising demographics of its readership.
