Calgary, Sept. 26, 2024 — The best and brightest talents in the province’s magazine industry gathered in Calgary on Sept. 26 to celebrate the Alberta Magazine Awards.

The annual event, hosted by the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA) and judged by industry leaders from across North America, showcases the outstanding work of magazine professionals in the province.

“The AMA finalists and winners represent the best in print and digital journalism, from fiction and poetry to insightful long-form articles that ensure our province, its people and concerns are at the forefront. AMPA is proud to recognize the achievements of so many creative and talented magazine makers whose work, in words and images, connect audiences to each other and the world around them, keeping us informed and entertained,” says AMPA executive director Suzanne Trudel.

The Alberta Magazine Awards program honours the work of Alberta’s magazine creators, art directors, writers, photographers, editors and illustrators. AMPA presented awards for excellence in magazine content published in 2023 in 16 Showcase categories and six Achievement award categories.

Odvod Publishing Inc.’s founder, Trudy Callaghan, was named the Achievement in Publishing recipient. Callaghan is a long-time champion of magazines, the people who make them and the audiences who enjoy them. She’s the force behind numerous publications, including EDify, an award-winning city magazine that celebrates what makes a city vibrant and shares deep insight into what’s important to Edmontonians. Callaghan is also a community builder and volunteers her skills as an AMPA board member, the chair of the board of directors at Ballet Edmonton, and a patron of the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts.

Best New Magazine was awarded to newcomer Mountain Life, Rocky Mountains, a magazine that provides an authentic voice for locals – and visitors who want to feel like locals. The Mountain Life team takes its readers inside the culture, showcasing the work of hundreds of writers, photographers, athletes, and artists as they pursue adventure and connection to the mountains.

Alberta Views was named the Magazine of the Year recipient, which – a quarter century in – continues to deliver at a superior level, with compelling editorials and columnists whose well-sculpted voices hit the tenor of the magazine. The team combines consistently high-quality editorial and sophisticated design into a winning package.

A wide range of magazines across the province earned podium spots for their work in multiple editorial and design categories.

The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA) represents Alberta-owned, Canadian-content consumer, cultural, specialty, professional and business magazines. We promote, support and advocate for the Alberta magazine publishing industry.
