Workshop: Cutting Through the Jargon

Event Date: 21st October 2017

Do you struggle to explain complex ideas to a general audience? Presented by LitFest in partnership with AMPA, this workshop by long-time science writer (and Edmontonian) Bob Holmes, will address the challenge through examples, exercises, and your own problem prose. You don’t have to be writing about science to participate—any complex or specialized subjects are welcome, from gardening to economics and everything in between.

Edmonton resident Bob Holmes is the author of FLAVOR: The Science of Our Most Neglected Sense (W.W. Norton). He has been a correspondent for New Scientist magazine for more than two decades. He has a PhD in evolutionary biology and is an enthusiastic home cook. In his 20+ years as a science writer, he has published more than 800 articles about evolution, ecology, environment, genetics, biomedicine, anthropology, and other topics. He taught for several years in the Science Writing program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and now teaches science journalism at Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on Vancouver Island, Canada.
