My Favo(u)rite Magazine benefit publication now available
This past spring, the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association was honoured to welcome creative consultant and magazine industry veteran Robert Newman as the keynote of the 2013 Alberta Magazines Conference. We were saddened to hear that only days later he was in a coma following a serious accident.
In a recent email update, Robert tells AMPA that he’s been recovering at home in New York these past months, undergoing significant physical therapy and testing, visiting doctors daily, and spending time with his young family. Although Robert is optimistic about his recovery, he’s “still uncertain when (or if) I'll be able to return to work and my online activities.” As a freelance consultant, Robert has no current income, and the medical expenses are overwhelming.
There have been significant fundraising efforts from Robert’s friends, family and colleagues, with over $59,000 donated to date. Now a new project is contributing to the cause. Andrew Losowsky of The Huffington Post and Jeremy Leslie of magCulture.com have produced a one-off newsprint publication called My Favo(u)rite Magazine, featuring the words and images of 88 art directors, photo editors and magazine editors from around the world. My Favo(u)rite Magazine is described by it’s creators as “a love letter to print,” with a series of essays from renowned creative directors revealing their favourite magazine of all time.
Robert tells us that My Favo(u)rite Magazine is "a really spectacular publication, full of delights for anyone who works in magazines on any level. A number of companies have donated printing and advertising, so there's no overhead, and all proceeds are going to benefit me and my family, to help us pay off our extensive medical bills and to give us a financial cushion until I can (hopefully) return to work. It's a very kind and generous project.”
Print and digital versions of My Favo(u)rite Magazine are now available for purchase in print or digital versions at magCulture’s online shop, as well as a limited-edition package containing a signed copy and original of one of the magazines featured in the publication.
