Established in 1973, Magazines Canada is the national trade association and the lead advocate for Canada’s magazine media. The organization represents Canadian-owned, Canadian content magazines in print and multiple digital platforms. This includes consumer, cultural, specialty, professional and business media magazines. French and English member titles offer a wide range of topics including business, professional, news, politics, sports, arts and culture, leisure, lifestyle, women and youth. Magazines Canada is a service organization: member-driven, volunteer-oriented, and not-for-profit. It is incorporated federally and operates within a set of bylaws. It believes in the inter-connected cultural and economic value of Canada’s magazine media. The organization works to foster an environment where new magazines are nurtured, established magazines are supported, skills are developed and excellence is recognized. Its purpose is to promote the value of the magazine sector in the creation and dissemination in multimedia of original Canadian content. Magazines Canada places a premium on its relationship with Ottawa. In addition to focusing on government affairs, the organization prioritizes the skills development of its community through networking, professional events and continuous learning opportunities.
Reporting to the CEO, and as part of the senior management team of the organization, the Director, Member Services and Development will lead the Member Services department and staff, which is responsible for: membership and stakeholder relationships, professional development and learning tools, events, and our magazine distribution arm. The Director will play a key role in organizational development, including grant development and reporting, business planning, and working with the CEO and senior management team to plan and coordinate Board, committee and membership meetings and events. Working closely with the Integrated Communications department, the Director will ensure that Magazines Canada delivers excellent events and conferences, professional development products, research (e.g. white papers and fact-books), and core member services which meet our brand goals and help present a consistent, quality, and responsive suite of programs and services to our community.
As the Canadian magazine media ecosystem evolves and expands how it publishes and distributes original Canadian-content across print, digital, social, mobile, event-based, and emerging platforms, the Director will play a key role in identifying innovations, trends, and new opportunities. The Director will help industry players respond to change by building familiarity and understanding, competency and excitement in new technologies, techniques, directions, best practices, and shared-learning venues.
As Magazines Canada itself adapts to a changing media environment, this position is an exciting chance to directly shape one of the country’s critical media sectors as it rapidly diversifies Canadian content (in the arts and culture, in consumer media, and in trade and professional circles) to local, national and international audiences across all platforms.
The Director, Member Services and Development will provide leadership in our Toronto location while working closely with the Ottawa-based staff. The Director will have oversight of approximately three direct reports, as well as contract staff and consultants, in the areas of Administrative Services, Membership, Sponsor Relations, Distribution Services, Events and Professional Development, Research, Special Projects, etc. The Director will coordinate member committees tasked with curriculum development, arts and literary magazines, business-to-business publishers, event planning, and membership. The Director will champion Magazines Canada’s staff and organizational efforts in the following areas:
- Professional development resources and events (including MagNet, the Arts & Literary Summit, and the Business Media Leadership Summit);
- Membership and related strategies, including the development of our new digital member category;
- Sponsorship and grant development and reporting (new and existing relationships);
- Distribution and other member services;
- General administration, as needed.
Qualified candidates will hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience through their work history and professional achievements. All candidates should have at least 10 years of experience in a related sector or in a similar role. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge of and experience in the Canadian arts, media, or publishing sectors. Bilingualism (English and French) is also an asset.
Magazines Canada is looking for a highly organized and adaptive leader who is passionate about promoting Canadian voices in an ever-expanding media environment. With proven experience in grant-writing and an excellent communicator, you know how to bring diverse communities together to share ideas, best practices, and take concrete action. Your energy and team-building skills are used in business development, critical path development, public outreach, and maintaining strong networks. You can take ownership of projects with minimal oversight, while motivating a team of staff members, consultants and contract support. You can build and manage your own departmental and project budgets, and can make decisions based on resource allocations and the overall strategic direction established by the Board of Directors and CEO. We are looking for candidates with the following range of experience and attributes:
- Excellent communications: written and oral;
- Experience planning and executing events;
- Experience with membership and sponsor development;
- Strong experience with grant writing and reporting;
- Experience or existing network within magazine media, publishing, and/or interactive media;
- Familiarity with digital, multimedia and/or mobile platforms and discovery tools;
- Creativity, flexibility and the ability to manage competing priorities;
- The ability to work as part of a small team and respond positively to constant change;
- A great sense of humour;
- Open to new ideas, collaborative, and motivated by shared outcomes.
