SOLD OUT Workshop: Shooting and Editing Video on Your iPhone

Event Date: 29th January 2018

Most of us barely scratch the surface of our smartphone’s capabilities. In this workshop, you’ll learn to make short videos for social media  platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, using professional techniques and workflow. In this full-day, hands-on session, journalism professor and trainer Sue Newhook will walk you through Video 101 for iPhone: shooting, editing and basic livestreaming. You’ll work on your own and in small teams to capture and package sequences and short interviews, following the same rules used by professional cinematographers and ‘mojo’ (mobile journalism) practitioners around the world.  The workshop will include tips and tricks for free and low-cost apps to help make your video posts more engaging. We’ll show you how to increase your in-house capacity to produce quality rich media—quickly, frequently and with high impact.

Note: this workshop is focused on Apple’s iOS operating system – it’s optimized for iPhones, iPads and iPods.

Susan Newhook is an assistant professor at the University of King’s College School of Journalism in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her main job is teaching video journalism with a mobile focus to her students; she also offers occasional short workshops for working journalists and other groups interested in mobile storytelling.

Sue has been a reporter and producer for CBC radio, television and digital, as well as freelancing for a range of broadcasters and news outlets in Canada and abroad.  She’s active and an administrator on the #mojocom and Mobile Storytelling Educators Facebook groups. At last count, she had 229 apps on her iPhone and admits she does NOT know how to use them all.
