Superman and Pocahontas

Publication: Glass Buffalo

Incited by an insensitive display of cultural appropriation, the protagonist of Hannah Schmakeit’s “Superman and Pocahontas” reflects on her missing friend. Built around cycles, this biting piece of short fiction examines the cultural and family trauma that can hide under childhood. As readers wonder how it all began, they’ll be caused to ask, when do settler Canadians’ complacency become complicity in regards to the country’s missing and murdered Indigenous women?
