Foodies of the Year

Publication: Western Living

Now in its 10th Year, Western Living’s Foodies of the Year awards program celebrates the chefs, restaurateurs, sommeliers, brewmasters, activists and farmers across the west who are shaping the way we eat today. This year’s winners included Kevin Cam, the Edmontonian whose restaurant, Baiju, is inspired by Shanghai speakeasies; JP Pedhirney, whose Bridgette Bar in Calgary merges the tried and true—like roast chicken and fries—with the experimental, such as braised rabbit on toast or escargot tarts; and Nihal Elwan, whose initiative to create Tayybeh, a series of pop-up dinner parties cooked by Syrian refugees, has changed the lives of both the women who cook the meals and the Vancouverites who dine with them. The piece is a series of profiles on each of these people, who collectively shine a light on just how innovative our dining scene in Western Canada can be.
